Nalachi Kodi and Sol Kadhi – Goa’s Traditional Refreshing Drinks
Nalachi Kodi and Sol Kadhi are traditional drinks straight from Goan homes. Made from coconut milk, Kokum (Aamsol or Amsul), with a pinch of salt, garlic and chillis, Nalachi Kodi is packed with health benefits and is popularly known for its digestive, cleansing, cooling, and refreshing qualities making it the perfect post-meal drink. It’s an excellent summer drink. Sol Kadhi has the same ingredients without coconut milk.
Nalachi Kodi can either be drunk after the meal or poured over rice and eaten after the meal. Sol Kadhi, having less viscosity than Nalachi Kodi, is drunk after the meal.
We’re going to break down the health benefits of each ingredient for you. Starting with coconut milk. Considering that coconuts are used in virtually every Goan dish, it’s no surprise that it is used in Nalachi Kodi too. Contrary to popular belief that coconut is not healthy for the heart, it has plenty of benefits. Rich in saturated fats, coconut milk boosts digestion and aids in weight loss and obesity. It assists in improving the immunity system. Coconut milk lessens inflammation, decreases the size of ulcers, and assists in minimizing the levels of bacteria and viruses that cause infections.
Kokum is the dried skin of the Garcinia Indica fruit and has similar properties to coconut milk. It aids in digestion, has remarkable cooling properties making it a perfect Summer drink, controls cholesterol and aids in weight loss. Kokum has anti-fungal and antioxidants properties. It is packed with essential nutrients and vitamins. and has anti-ageing, and anti-inflammatory attributes.
Garlic is highly nutritious, combats sickness like the common cold. It reduces blood pressure and lowers cholesterol. Garlic contains antioxidants that could help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia. Garlic could increase longevity, might improve athletic performances, detoxifies metal in the body, and possibly improves bone health.
Chilli is high in vitamins. It contains Vitamins C, B6, K1, A, Potassium, and Copper. Had in tiny amounts, the contribution of chilli is minimal. Like Coconut milk and Kokum, chillis aid in weight reduction.
